Products description
Official reissue of the only vinyl single of Leeds Punks THE UNDERDOGS. The 7" was originally released in 1983 on RIOT CITY RECORDS.
THE UNDERDOGS formed in 1981 in Leeds and recorded 2 demos between 1982 and 1983. All 4 band members were self-confessed admirers of THE CLASH, but their own produced sound was characterised by a rudimentary, snotty, raw, simple, fast punk rock that perfectly matched the RIOT CITY style.
With this EP THE UNDERDOGS successfully docked on the punk scene. Simple chord sequences in a regular, repetitive structure and the dirty raw, rough sound were features of various UK punk bands at the time. The songs "East of Dachau", "Johnny go home" and "Dead Soldier" then also mark a certain similarity in the game, but provide the necessary pogo factor that sticks to the melodies. While "Johnny go home" partly has SLF references, "Dead Soldier" is a pure pogo masher, which is served simple, fast and snotty. Later in the band's career they supported THE TOY DOLLS, ANGELIC UPSTARTS and SUBHUMANS, but never got the chance to play outside the UK and - nomen est omen - were granted UNDERDOG status.
The EP stayed in the UK INDIE hit charts for 2 weeks and climbed up to number 49.
