Why is a ‘Best Of’ album being released in 2026 for a band that split up in 2008?
Because things haven’t improved; in fact, they seem to be getting worse and worse. Because the music and lyrics are therefore relevant to the current situation, as crazy as that may sound. Much of the content still holds true; some conditions are even more extreme today than they were when we were active as a band.
More and more people seem keen to leave the Age of Enlightenment behind, politically reverting to the Middle Ages, voluntarily choosing hostility towards democracy, the press and science. When we sang 20 years ago about unscrupulous bandits exploiting the world, we didn’t have in mind the global axis of power wielded by reactionary oligarchs and autocrats, nor a libertarian AI regime.
Our imagination wasn’t even big enough for that rubbish!
We were lucky enough to grow up in a time that was musically and politically utterly exciting and vibrant, and to have started the band. We moved from the 1980s into the 1990s, were inspired by many interesting musicians from the punk and ska scenes, and wanted to make our own contribution to this movement.
We did that for over 15 years.
It’s been a long journey, with four releases, countless gigs and tours. We were part of a youth and subculture that served as a wake-up call for many young people around the world and sparked a politically rebellious and resolutely anti-racist movement. As a band, we were both part of and an expression of those turbulent times. We’re happy and proud of that, which is why we’ve now produced this historical record.
