German-language punk from 1985! Even the cover is great. The slogan ‘Harte Zeiten’ (Hard Times) and this kid with his toy gun, shooting hat and apron, haha... AUSBRUCH were a critical, political punk band, but they skilfully avoided annoying listeners with trite slogans. The lyrics of songs such as ‘Wo ist die Freiheit?’ (Where is freedom?), ‘Schlachtfeld Europa’ (Battlefield Europe), ‘Zuviele Nazis’ (Too many Nazis), “Massaker” (Massacre), ‘Südafrika’ (South Africa), etc. deal with the important issues of the time. The Cold War between the USA and the USSR, which had its centre here in Europe. The apartheid terror regime in South Africa, the old and new Nazis who simply refuse to disappear... Lyrically, AUSBRUCH, founded in Geilenkirchen and Aachen in 1981, expresses itself clearly and unambiguously. Musically, they are unexcited and not as hard and hateful as one might assume. Like so many bands of the 80s, AUSBRUCH also have their own distinctive sound.
The biggest hit on the record, which found and continues to find its way onto many mixtapes and compilations, is of course ‘Deutschland brennt’ (Germany is burning). A huge hit, still great to listen to. ‘See the fire in the cities, follow the glow of the Molotov. See the fire in the cities, you still have this little hope. Berlin is burning, Hamburg is burning, Munich is burning, Germany is burning!’ Awesome. The obligatory sing-along drinking song ‘Ich bin voll’ (I'm drunk) is also a must, haha... ‘Harte Zeiten’ is a timeless German punk classic and comes in restored original artwork, supplemented by an inlay with photos and liner notes by bassist Hansel Dieken and comes with a download code. Awesome! The LP is a must for anyone who likes German punk from the 80s!
